Healthcare contributes ~5% of global greenhouse gas emissions. But what if the quality improvement infrastructure we already have is the fastest route to decarbonising care?

A new Editorial @DrSaraEhsan and @HardeepSinghMD argues that environmental sustainability and healthcare quality are not parallel priorities, they are inseparable.

Drawing on a new QI study by Spoyalo et al. showing a 53% cut in perioperative warming emissions with no compromise in patient safety, the authors set out five recommendations:

1. Embed sustainability as a core quality domain, not an optional add-on
2. Close the evidence-to-practice gap using proven QI strategies
3. Leverage C-suite leadership to create interprofessional accountability
4. Develop metrics that capture both clinical and environmental performance
5. Scale through policy and governance reform

The fields of sustainability and QI have advanced in silos for too long. Now is the time to bring them together.
