$HOOD
Okay just got home from the Robinhood Gold event in NYC. I have many thoughts so going to outline them all in the post below, it'll be a long one:
First off, I want to really congratulate the Robinhood team. I got to meet product designers, engineers who've been there for 7-8 years, and employees from when $HOOD was under 100 people as a startup.
Throwing an event is really hard. I've never been to an event in person like this, but you would've thought Robinhood had done tons of these before with the level of professionalism and smoothness of the event.
Those early employees must be so proud to see their startup turn into a public company and put on the performance they did today.
Alright, now my takeaways from the product announcements...
1.) 1% Unlimited Deposit Match - I don't even think I have the words to say what I feel about this product. Many of you saw my wild hair on the livestream since I was sitting in the front row, but what you didn't see was my jaw DROP when Vlad showed a 1% unlimited match on all deposits.
Why is this so important?
One of the MAIN reasons people found out about Robinhood last year was because they offered a 1% match on transferring your brokerage to Robinhood. If you transferred $1M you got $10K...I personally saw many high net worth individuals leave Schwab and Fidelity for this one reason. They had no reason to stay and 1% match was incredible.
When that promotion ended, I felt one of Robinhood's best customer acquisition strategies had ended as well.
People are motivated to leave their legacy applications if you give them a real monetary incentive. Robinhood paid about $11M in 2023 to get $1BILLION onto their platform via this strategy.
For them to bring that back...and have no time limit on it...and for it to be UNLIMITED ON EVERY DOLLAR you put into the platform...I mean, I think we may see deposit and assets under management go higher.
On top of the 1% match, you get 5% APY for that money, so it's basically a 6% APY which is unheard of for these fintech products. Yes, you have to pay $5/month for gold (this is...kind of cheap, lol) and yes you have to leave the money on the platform for a few years to keep the match, but if users love using the product then they won't have an incentive to take that money off anyway.
Now, some people have said they feel this is unsustainable and that $HOOD won't be able to afford this. I'll have more to say on this later, but remember:
- Robinhood is a tech company with fixed costs
- They make money off deposits via cash sweep, so the more deposits, the more they can pay to users
- Robinhood is already GAAP profitable AFTER implementing this SAME strategy last year, so they understand the unit economics of this very well
2.) The New UI
So, this is why being a product focused company is so important. UI/UX may not be a "moat" because it can be copied...sure, a product can be copied.
But a product experience is VERY hard to copy.
The new UI is customizing your portfolio to you in a way that is just easier to use the product so it provides more value -- its a modern approach to how you look at your finances. I got to speak to some of the product designers today at the event and one of them said that the team obsesses over every detail when building out what the product looks and FEELS like.
That new UI is just going to make the product stickier for their core users and be beyond anything other brokers can offer when it comes to user experience.
3.) The New Gold Credit Card
Alright, so this credit card is going to be a big deal.
Robinhood partnered with $V Visa for this card, and the CEO of the company showed up at the event to talk about the partnership. Visa handles trillions of transactions daily so I feel Robinhood made the right choice to go with them to support the infrastructure needed to make this card work.
3% cash back against all purchases with NO annual fee is just incredible. I thought they might do 2% but it ended up being 3%.
Some people said other companies offer 3%. Yes, this is true -- but many of those companies have a limit of how much that 3% can be claimed for OR they have a huge yearly/monthly fee. Robinhood is offering the card for $5/month which is laughable quite honestly and you are getting a 3% cash back PLUS 5% APY on all your cash. It's just incredible.
The most unique feature about the 3% cash back is how seamlessly it's integrated into the product itself. So when you have your 3% cash back, let's say $100, you can press one button and it goes into the brokerage...and now that $100 gets 1% for being deposited, and then another 5% APY just for being on the app.
DUDE WHAT!?
You get 3%, take the money from that cash back and put it into the $HOOD brokerage, get 1% for putting it there and then another 5% if you leave it there.
I think many people are going to sign up for this card and begin benefitting off these rewards. The card itself has a beautiful UI that allows you to track everything in one app.
Also, the card offers the ability to automatically delete subscriptions and anonymize purchases you make so that NO ONE, including Robinhood, can see what things you may be buying -- which is a big, big win for privacy in a world where consumers desperately want to not be tracked by big tech.
Overall -- a brand new UI, 1% cash back on unlimited deposits, and one of the best/cheapest credit cards I've ever seen makes me feel excited about Robinhood's future.
I think they are actually living up to their mission of democratizing finance, and for someone who's parents came from India and knew nothing about the stock market, Robinhood was my introduction to this world via their product. I've been able to introduce my parents to the stock market, and that's only because Robinhood's product brought me into the world of investing.
I opened a Roth IRA for my mom at 53 years old on $HOOD and she was able to understand what she's doing and how to deposit money into that Roth because of how simple and user friendly this product is. Product really, really matters.
Robinhood's mission of actually bringing finance to people who historically would never have access to it is a mission I want to support, and this event today proved they are getting closer to living up to that mission.
