One thing that ties this whole loop together is insulin. In a classic study, raising insulin in healthy people increased sympathetic nerve activity, which is the same system that pushes resting heart rate up and makes deep sleep harder to reach. A person with chronically high insulin is pushing against every step on this list, and bringing insulin down with protein-centered meals and regular lifting makes the rest of the loop easier.
Fatty liver used to be an adult disease, but it's now being diagnosed in middle schoolers, and sugary drinks are a big reason why. Liquid sugar is absorbed quickly, insulin rises with it, and the fructose half goes almost straight to the liver, where high insulin helps turn it into fat. The good news is that the liver responds fast. In one trial, boys who cut free sugars for 8 weeks lost about a third of their liver fat. Clearing the soda and juice out of the fridge is a simple place to start.
In 1983, a BBC interviewer asked Richard Feynman why two magnets push each other apart — and he refused to answer it.
What he did instead is the best seven minutes on thinking ever filmed.
Bookmark & watch today, no matter what.
There are essential fatty acids and essential amino acids. There is no essential carbohydrate.
The body does need some glucose, mainly for red blood cells, which have no mitochondria. But the liver and kidneys can make all of it through gluconeogenesis, typically around 100 to 150 grams a day in adults, using lactate, glycerol from fat, and a small amount of amino acids.
Carb tolerance still varies a lot from person to person, and my new book, The Carb Crisis, explains why. The evidence is clear: carbs are optional, not required. Preorder link in the first reply.
Many people choose a plant-based diet to cause less harm to animals and the planet, and that's an admirable goal. But good intentions don't guarantee good outcomes.
Grain and legume crops come with their own deaths. Harvesters, plows, and rodent poisons kill huge numbers of mice, birds, and other small animals every season, and those deaths are rarely counted. One estimate put it at about 55 animal deaths per 100 kg of usable protein from wheat, compared with about 2 from grass-fed beef.
The evidence is clear that no food system is free of death. The fair way to compare diets is by their full outcomes, not by which deaths are easiest to see.
If you’re pro-vaccine, still, after everything we know….watch this video. Viewer beware, this is gut wrenching. But this is what vaccines do to children.
