Stay tuned 💫
It takes more than 700 wild anchovies to feed ONE farmed salmon.
More than half the seafood we eat now comes from fish farms. Farming was supposed to take pressure off our ocean, but a 5-year investigation by Ian Urbina / The Outlaw Ocean Project in The New York Times Magazine shows much of it is raised on wild fish taken from the sea.
- 1 in 5 fish caught in our ocean isn’t eaten by people. Most of it is ground into fishmeal and fish oil.
- More than 10,000 vessels and 1,400 fishmeal plants keep this industry running.
- More than 16.5 million people live within a mile of a fishmeal plant.
- More than 250 seafood companies have crimes or concerns documented in their supply chains.
There are better ways forward, and they’re already here. Mussels, oysters, clams and scallops filter their own food from the water and need no feed at all. New feeds made from algae, insects and fish leftovers can take pressure off wild fish.

Rivers and the ocean are more connected than we often think.
Rivers carry freshwater, nutrients, sediment, and organic matter from land to the sea, helping support coastal ecosystems, wetlands, mangroves, seagrass, and marine life.
But they can also carry pollution, plastics, chemicals, and excess nutrients downstream.
Healthy rivers help create a healthier ocean. Protecting one means protecting the other.

Pretty cool to see the amount of power it takes for a whale to get this far out of the water. 🐋

Rob believed conservation was about more than protecting wildlife, it was about reimagining our relationship with the natural world. His vision challenged us to create a future where people and nature don’t simply coexist, but thrive together, a belief that remains at the heart of Sharkwater’s mission today.

“Ocean and sky. There’s something beautiful about humans and waves and the scenes and relationships that creates. I’ve found such joy in the moments of surfers going up and over a wave because of how differently people can complete the task. I’m not sure whose feet these are, but whoever it is, you are all of us.”

How do you map hope?
Mission Blue works with communities around the world to create and recognize "Hope Spots." These special areas are critical to the health and wellbeing of the ocean and planet, and have helped make the case for creating Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) and other conservation measures in many communities.
This map shows where Hope Spots and global protections overlap -- and where they don't. Mission Blue is working to fill in these gaps and empower ocean conservation toward the 30x30 goal.

Monterey Bay Aquarium is showing you great alternatives to seafood we shouldn't be eating -- and we're fully subscribed!
RP // Unagi is gonna be a no for us. Try our faux-nagi recipe using green-rated sablefish or eggplant instead! Equally scrumptious, without the heavy side of environmental concern.
