Been reading Cavafy lately...
And I was struck by the similarities he shares with Larkin in many of his poems
(though not the big classical history ones, obviously)
For example... 👇
A book about a clockwise orbit around the coast, through the countryside and into the cities of England, Wales and Scotland.
A look at the country through Britishness AND Greek eyes...
It can be downloaded for free. Why not give it a go? What's to lose??

The rock of Homer in Chios.
Where the poet would sit and read his stories to the crowds.
Here I am, regaling all the fans and admirers of my book with a reading of a chapter from 'Here is Greece'...
💫 Σήμερα στοχαζόμαστε με τον φιλόσοφο Θρασύβουλα, και θυμόμαστε τον τεράστιο Θανάση Βέγγο που έφυγε σαν σήμερα πριν 15 χρόνια.

Odysseus's journey v my own

I have written about travelling to Troy (with Homer as a guide). Although mine was at the end of 10 years journeying, rather than the beginning.
Didn't come across a Cyclopes either.
@arisroussinos Ah. I was sure this was the bend next to Gastouri's Philharmonic hall.
I've been exiled from the island for only a few months - but already my memory is slipping!
@nomadpossum Ah thank you! But three books - almost 300,000 words - I think that's enough for now!

And yes, unbelievably, I have left Greece. But I know I'll return.
Greece first gives you the journey, and then the pain. How can anyone stay away?
My final ever piece of writing - I promise!
I have written about the long journey I took from Corfu, sailing down the Ionian and then up again, through the Aegean Sea, stopping at the different islands along the way. To finally finish my travels in Troy.

And, finally, I reach Odysseus's Troy!
"I’ll tell you the tale of a monotropos man, driven to wander far and wide to reach the sacred citadel of Troy..."

Philoctetes's cave, on Lemnos.
On the way to Troy, the fellas all stopped off to do a bit of hunting. Philocretes was bitten by a snake and his wound got so infected and smelly and offensive that the other men demanded that he be left right here...

Today marks 10 years since I first started my travels around Greece (and exactly 5 years since my book 'Here is Greece' came out)
I have written here about my very final journey. From my island, buffered and blown around the seas, to end in Troy...
