Zack Polanski is wasting no time. Hours after announcing his plans to stand in the Holborn & St Pancras by-election, the Green Party leader was out of the traps meeting party activists at Camden Town station before a gloomy evening door knocking.

“I think the biggest thing about this campaign is it’s a win-win for people,” Polanski told The Times between stops at flats on a north London housing estate. “People have said a couple of times, ‘I’m thinking about giving Burnham a chance.’

“But my point is that this election is not about who the government is — there will still be a Labour government. You can still give Burnham a chance and elect a Green MP who will hold him to account.”

On paper this seat should be Polanski’s for the taking - his party had historic success here in May’s local elections, returning a record 11 councillors, making the Green and Progressive Alliance the official opposition to Labour.

But on the ground in Camden it appeared he may face an uphill struggle - there was a surprising amount of residual loyalty to Starmer and although many blamed Andy Burnham for unseating the former prime minister they weren’t too keen on Polanski either

Ed Sheeran addresses the controversy surrounding Macklemore’s removal from his tour and says, “What is happening in Gaza is catastrophic and unjustifiable.”

“Before I play some songs tonight, I hope it’s okay if I say a few words about this last week,” Sheeran said at the top of Saturday’s show. “I’m used to my music being criticized, and I’m always happy to take that because I’m lucky. A lot of you like my stuff, and to be honest, I’m surprised. I’m not surprised that I’ve even done it. You know, it’s normal. But this week, the criticism was about something much more important, and I’ve had to take and make difficult decisions, and I am making mistakes, and I’m so so sorry.”

Sheeran also said he was “appalled by the conflict between Israel and Palestine,” describing the suffering caused by the war as a “human tragedy,” while explaining that he has generally sought to keep his concerts focused on “unity, joy, escapism, love” rather than his own political views.
