Quentin Sommerville travelled to Myanmar without the permission of the authorities - the only way to report. During his 10 days there, he spent time with rebel fighters and travelled to hospitals and front-line positions in Bago and Karen states https://t.co/jnObcFOIKr
When governments erase history, censor remembrance, and punish dissent, it’s easy to feel powerless.
That’s the point of authoritarianism.
To us feel isolated, afraid, and silent.
In April 1989, some university students in Beijing gathered in Tiananmen Square.
At first, it was to mourn the death of a political leader. Soon, they began to call for political and economic reforms.
On the night of 3 June 1989, heavily armed troops and armoured vehicles moved to ‘clear’ protestors from Tiananmen Square.
Millions joined. However, they faced a brutal crackdown.
Thirty-seven years later, the exact number of victims is unknown.
For three decades, Hong Kong hosted the world’s largest annual candlelight vigils for the victims and families.
But in 2020, Hong Kong authorities passed the National Security Law, banning rememberance.
Chow Hang-Tung, vigil organiser, was charged, arrested and is in prison for daring to remember.
Remembering Tiananmen Square crackdown is nearly impossible in mainland China or Hong Kong now.
An entire generation is denied the truth about what happened on June 4, 1989.
But silence cannot rewrite history.
Memory survives because together, we refuse to let it disappear.
Remember Tiananmen. Today and always.

Veteran news anchor Jon Snow has shared that he’s living with dementia, speaking publicly for the first time to raise awareness of a condition affecting around 1 million people across the UK.
Jon and his wife, neurologist Dr Precious Lunga, are supporting Alzheimer’s Society @alzheimerssoc and shared the story of Jon’s diagnosis in @DailyMail as part of our Defeating Dementia campaign with the newspaper.

We’ve partnered with Jon, in association with @Channel4, on a powerful new documentary airing on 20 June. Jon Snow: A Last Big Story looks at how he’s navigating life with dementia, and how, when we all come together, we can change the story.
Thank you to Jon and Precious for their courage and openness to bring much-needed attention to dementia 💙

I’m hearing disturbing news about the sustained harassment, intimidation, and surveillance of HRDs from ‘Movimento Xingu Vivo para Sempre’ defending land, environmental and indigenous rights in connection with the Volta Grande Mining Project, in Brazil.
This has intensified amid ongoing legal proceedings on the project’s licensing and the potential for displacement of local communities. I am particularly concerned about the indigenous women who took the lead in peaceful protests to defend their rights.
The State must ensure that the HRDs can carry out their activities without fear of reprisals and free from restrictions. All harassment must cease, and their protection must be guaranteed.

It isn’t just Palestinians – Western media is also ignoring shocking accounts of abuse from white Western activists detained by Israeli forces after an illegal raid on the Global Sumud Flotilla.
We compiled 11 of the most disturbing testimonies.
In just one week, 77 children were killed or injured in Lebanon.
That is 11 children a day.
Children should not pay the price of conflict.

A new investigation by @alisonkilling and the @FinancialTimes reveals that the Uyghur Region has the world’s largest detention system relative to population. https://t.co/CqRQ346c6P
The study tracked 579 detention compounds from 2011 to today, which showed the region currently has the capacity to detain around 627,000 people without overcrowding — nearly 1 in 40 people.
The camps may no longer dominate headlines, but the system of repression and the genocide have not disappeared. It has evolved.
📍Italy
Congratulations to human rights defenders Roberto Malini and Lisetta Sperindei on receiving the Goffredo Parise Prize for Reportage, one of Italy’s significant awards dedicated to journalism of testimony, civic information and the defence of freedom of expression.
The prize highlights the importance of protecting journalists, HRDs and citizens who suffer intimidation or legal harassment for speaking out in the public interest.
📍Cambodia
🚨Five Mother Nature Cambodia environmental defenders have been imprisoned for nearly two years for their peaceful activism.
We call on Cambodia’s appeals court to overturn their unjust convictions and release them immediately and unconditionally.

There are multiple reasons why Sudan is the world's worst human crisis today, multiple bad actors. But the UAE is one of the worst, with its support for the brutal RSF militia committing mass murder and mass rape. Pres. Trump, having taken $500m from the UAE, is silent about it.
#Ukraine: RSF participated in the 🇺🇦 parliamentary commission investigating the case of journalist Victoria Roshchyna, who died in a Russian prison. RSF welcomes the 🇺🇦 authorities’ efforts to advance the investigation. Those responsible for her death must be brought to justice.
