Walter Russell Mead on similarities between Davey Crockett—who paid for voters' drinks with beaver pelts—and Donald Trump:
"It is not a bunch of platonic philosopher kings debating 'the issues.' Mass politics in our country is a very different thing than this somewhat attenuated elite spectacle where everything is driven by proprieties and so on. And you could say that's some sort of an advance over the old dirty mobs and riots and bought votes and outrageous courthouse thefts of votes which are, believe me, some of the most common and widespread things in the United States—north south east and west.
Human nature has not changed that much since Davey Crockett was slapping pelts down on the bar in Tennessee. So this sort of elite college boy spectacle of bloodless debates and so on, occasionally interrupted by the dreadful WIllie Horton ad that everyone tsk tsks, that is not our normal thing. So in some ways, Trump's style of politics is reviving politics, mass politics, politics that are directed at emotions rather than reason....it's more human. It might not be better, but that's a different question."
