The Harrowing of Hell

Catholic doctrine, as professed in the Apostles’ Creed — “He descended into hell” — teaches that after His death on the Cross, Jesus’ soul, united to His divine Person, descended into the abode of the dead (Sheol/Hades).

This was not the hell of eternal damnation. It was the waiting place of the righteous souls who had died before Christ: Adam and Eve, Abraham, Moses, the prophets, and all the just of the Old Testament. They were not tormented, yet they were deprived of the beatific vision of God, longing for the promised Redeemer.

There, Christ came not as one who suffers, but as Conqueror and Savior.

He proclaimed the victory of His Passion and Resurrection. He “preached to the spirits in prison” (1 Peter 3:19), broke the gates of death, and led the holy souls in triumph into the glory of Heaven — the first fruits of the Redemption.

The Harrowing of Hell: the moment when death itself was harrowed, emptied, and defeated forever.
