We need to reframe lying. Is it conscious manipulation or a stress response?
How often do we miss what the limbic system is telling us because we overly focus on the words themselves. #WhatWeBelieve#SelfReg#stress

The #SelfReg of teachers is critical to the regulation of kids & the classroom as a whole. In Self-Reg Schools: A Handbook for Educators, @StuartShanker & @SusanHopkins5 help to identify a regulated & dysregulated teacher & how each affects their students & learning environment.
Every day our brains & bodies are faced with inputs that contribute to constantly shifting states of arousal. This affects our behaviour, thinking & moods. In #SelfReg we use a matrix tool based on the work of Robert Thayer, to assess our energy & tension. https://t.co/LZ8QfxfeIz
@drclairetaylor I’m a teacher and I also have ADHD. I strongly suggest that teachers dealing with this read “Self-Reg Schools” by Dr Stuart Shanker and Susan Hopkins. All kids, but especially these ones, would benefit from a Self-Reg approach. These kids are expressing stress behaviour, not

It's the first week of school! ✏️ Here are some whole classroom strategies #educators can use to address #anxiety:
🔹 Teach kids about their brains
🔹 Normalize anxiety & teach about its benefits
🔹 Frame mistakes as a natural part of learning
What else can you do? #SelfReg
"See a child as misbehaving and you are likely to respond in a harsh, even punitive manner. See the same child as exhibiting stress behaviour and you respond by helping that child to self-regulate." ~ Stuart Shanker

Dear #educators. The time it takes to get to know your students is invaluable & so worth the investment. Relationships are at the heart of #SelfReg! Each child is unique, and YOU can make a difference.
As @susanhopkins5 says, "You are the strategy." 🌟 https://t.co/2juz2H0C5j
"A stress cycle means you have gone from self-regulating to self-dysregulating: over-reactive to stress – internal as well as external – in a way that ensures that you will stay stressed." ~ Stuart Shanker

"A child's "problematic" behaviour tells us that what was really happening was that the limbic system had limited his capacity to think, and our pushing him too hard is causing a fight-or-flight response." ~ Stuart Shanker

Originally published in 2018, this paper reframes the Victorian view that the failure to succeed in math is due to a lack of perseverance. Instead Stuart Shanker explores the multiple stresses that lead to high #mathanxiety & how #SelfReg can help. https://t.co/zwCzCHzU3l
"As teachers and parents, we must learn how to obseve children's energy levels throughout the day and make adjustments in practice that help children to down-regulate and up-regulate. ~ Stuart Shanker

A child's behavior isn't about me.
They're not doing this to me.
It's a symptom like a sneeze showing us a cold, a cut showing there's a wound, and a scab showing us healing.
This behavior is showing us that the nervous system is rough. Can we become curious? What is underneath?
Educators often want me to to tell them what to do when kids are behaving poorly due to dysregulation. My answer is always the same, prevent dysregulation. Don't wait for the crisis, prevent the crisis by setting up a trauma-informed, safe, regulated space.
