Holy crap. Insane CG lightning with anvil crawlers at sunset with mammatus and a rainbow. How will I ever be able to top this? #NJwx#lightning#thunderstorm
The main severe threat today exists across eastern Nebraska/western Iowa, where an Enhanced Risk (level 3/5) exists. Here, initial supercells with a risk for mainly large hail and damaging winds (along with a low but nonzero tornado risk) are expected to develop near a remnant outflow boundary, eventually morphing into one or more bowing segments with a significant damaging wind risk this evening.
Elsewhere, isolated supercells are possible from western South Dakota all the way down into the western Kansas vicinity, posing a risk for large hail and damaging winds (and perhaps a tornado with northward extent. From the Midwest into the Northeast, widely scattered clusters of severe storms with a damaging wind risk are expected, as well.
POWERFUL STORM: A rapidly-strengthening Super Typhoon #Bavi is set to affect the Mariana Islands this weekend. The Joint Typhoon Warning Center is forecasting a max wind of 150kt/173mph - a Category 5 storm. Bavi will continue west toward Taiwan and/or China by the end of next week.
Another day of extreme heat is expected across much of the eastern half of the country, where daytime highs will exceed 90s for most with 100s once again expected across much of the coastal Mid-Atlantic and Northeast. In addition to the heat, humidity will once again play a role, allowing for a widespread swath of heat indices in the 100s, with 110+ values once again expected across the Mid-Atlantic.
Impressively, the National Blend of Models (NBM) has uptrended for Maryland and Virginia, where there could be spots that get between 115-120 for a heat index! This is super dangerous heat, and Extreme Heat Warnings are once again in effect for most.
Remember it takes just 10 to 15 minutes in these conditions before heat stress is possible, and not much longer before it can escalate to heat stroke. Avoid strenuous activities outside, and if you must venture out, remember to stay hydrated! Only two more days of this level of heat left before things cool down somewhat...
@PappaSoden Us too - we're getting closer! Still ironing out a few kinks so we can ensure a really fast/responsive experience. Thanks for your patience!
Most people: "Wow, it's hotter than Hades outside!"🥵
Meteorologists: "An anomalously strong ridge of high pressure is bringing record-breaking heat and humidity through the Fourth of July. Millions could will heat index values above 100°F and very warm overnight lows will provide minimal relief. Along the northern edge of the ridge, a classic 'Ring of Fire' pattern may spark rounds of strong to severe thunderstorms, while even isolated storms could develop beneath the ridge where instability is sufficient." 🤓🌡️⛈️
Tropical Storm Nine is expected to intensify into a major Category 4 Typhoon as it approaches the Mariana Islands - including Guam - this weekend.
Although uncertainty remains regarding the specific track, there is increasing confidence in a strong typhoon, bringing significant impacts.
The next name on the list is Bavi.
@DarylStaton The app is close, but we’re taking a bit more time to ensure the it performs to our standards. Thank you for your patience - we’re really excited for this one!
