First look at a new ‘DOCTOR WHO’ animated series.
The series - intended for pre-school children - follows the Doctor and his friends Hannah, Beastie and Toast-IE as they embark on adventures through time & space.
This is the problem with mystery box writing. It tricks the viewer into thinking the show has depth where none exists. It’s asking the viewer to do the legwork of filling in the blanks which the writer will never fill in himself because he’s been winging it the whole time. It’s intentional trickery to keep the audience in their seats. The best analogy to explain this style of writing is the scene from My Cousin Vinny where Vinny explains how the prosecution is building a case, and he’s showing you all the bricks he’s using to build his case. How they each have the correct height, the correct width, and when put together they form a house. But when you look at them from another angle they’re as thin as those playing cards, because there’s nothing there. THAT is Lindelof’s writing style.
That’s exactly what happened with Lost. People watched it all the way through, expecting a brilliant explanation of all the mysteries peppered throughout the show, only to get jerked around the final season with a “flash sideways” plot which turned out to be all of them hanging out in Heaven’s waiting room, a pointless waste of time if ever there was one, before they ended the show with nearly none of the mysteries solved, only for Lindelof to offer the limp-wristed excuse that Lost was “never about the mysteries, but about the characters.” By that point it became apparent that the mystery of those mystery boxes wasn’t what was in them, but whether there was ever anything in them to begin with.
Spoiler alert: there was nothing in them.
The writers wrote a bunch of checks that they never cashed by the end of the series, and the fans who were left holding the bag with a million theories, none of which ever came to fruition, were in an uproar when that final episode aired. The anger was so loud that network executives heard it and made Lindelof and co. make a couple webisodes with Hurley that actually explained what the fuck was going on with all those mysteries. And that anger persisted for so long that, years later when the Breaking Bad finale aired, Lost fans logged onto Twitter to shit on Lindelof once more and tell him that THAT was how to make a series finale (posts which he hilariously kept retweeting. It’s funny, though, how Vince Gilligan’s triumph somehow became a SECOND black eye for Lindelof).
That’s the end result of a writer filling the screen with dozens of upon dozens of Chekhov’s Guns only to arrogantly ask you why you ever expected any of them to be fired by the end of the show. After all, it was all about the characters, not the veritable arsenal littered throughout the stage. They were told this was a show that DEMANDED their attention because they wouldn’t want to miss any vital clues, only to find out that they didn’t need to pay any attention in the first place because nothing mattered. People were tricked into thinking they had planned things out, when in reality their ACTUAL writing style is to make shit up as they go along with no plan or forethought in mind. Their writing style is intentional misdirection, getting people to look at the left hand so they don’t focus too much on what the right hand is doing, or isn’t doing, and vice versa endlessly.
So for those of you who expected any of this out of this show and have more expectations for season 2, please be aware that that’s the established M.O. of people like Lindelof. They’re TRICKING YOU into writing half the show for them in your head, making you believe that if things don’t happen this season, don’t worry, all those things will definitely happen NEXT season. And you won’t realize how badly they jerked you around until the final episode airs and you discover that they delivered on almost nothing of what was promised the entire run. And if you don’t believe me, don’t take MY word for it.
Take @JamesGunn’s.
@comicsexplained I just started in on Geoff Johns's run and after seeing the start of that vs. all the clips of "Lanterns" I've seen:
Yeah, no. "Lanterns" ain't it.
@learning_yohei Good literature that leaves you reflecting on philosophies and ideas hitherto unknown to you, resulting in a complete re-evaluation and change of how you live.
Or, you know, a good burger. Burgers are always pretty good.
