As a gay Black man, I understand why my heterosexual sister may view this situation differently than I do. Her concern is about privacy, children, and what she believes is appropriate and I’m not dismissing that.

I’m challenging where that concern comes from and what we may unintentionally imply when expressing it.
If a trans woman using a women’s restroom suddenly becomes more concerning because a child is present, I think we have to ask: What exactly are we afraid is going to happen? Because when that fear immediately becomes sexual, we can unintentionally associate being transgender with being predatory or even pedophilia and those things are not synonymous.

But she challenged me too: Why should her beliefs have to change simply because someone else believes differently? And that deserves a conversation.

Maybe the answer isn’t forcing agreement. Maybe it’s learning how to coexist. You can have boundaries, beliefs, and concerns while still examining whether those concerns are based on someone’s actual behavior or assumptions attached to their identity.

We didn’t have this conversation to prove who was right. We had it to understand why the other person thinks the way they do.
