iLobolo has lost its essence. It was meant to bring families together at a time when women were not emancipated & needed men to decide on who gets to take custodianship over them.
Today, women can make their own money, buy their own properties, sleep with whomever they want & conceive or abort if they wish... yet they still want men to pay ilobolo for them.
And uninformed families think ilobolo was cows or money, when it was actually about gifts & compensation for acquiring an asset, stripping it of its name & making it your own, so you can use it as a helper & a surrogate.
Black people need to liberate themselves from these outdated practices. Women need to decide if they want to remain children or want to be independently-minded adults. iLobolo must fall. And formal marriage is outdated.
