After seven years expertly expanding the Community and Public Sector Union’s influence, you’ve now been elevated ( by the ACTU executive, naturally ) to the very pinnacle of the Australian labour movement. One can only marvel at how the same interlocking networks that reliably deliver safe Labor seats, pre-selection control, and preferential industrial relations laws somehow managed to identify the perfect successor to Sally McManus without the slightest hint of backroom choreography.

It’s almost touching. The party that lives off union affiliation fees and campaign muscle hands the keys to the peak union body to one of its most reliable operators, and everyone involved solemnly insists this is nothing more than the independent voice of working people asserting itself.

The gratitude flowing toward the outgoing secretary is particularly heartwarming; after all, she helped shape an entire government’s workplace agenda.

One might almost call the relationship… symbiotic.

A tremendous honour indeed — the honour of ensuring the industrial wing of the ALP continues to speak with one carefully coordinated voice while the political wing continues to legislate in its favour. The rest of the country can only look on in admiration at this timeless Australian tradition of mutual reinforcement, all conducted under the noble banner of “representing all working people.”

Corruption involving public money is overwhelmingly a function of ACCESS.

The party that controls the Treasury, the contracts, the planning decisions, the appointments & the regulatory agencies has the means, the motive & daily opportunity.

A party that has been out of office for twelve years has NONE of those levers.

Suggesting that the long-term opposition should be the primary focus of corruption anxiety is therefore an inversion of basic institutional reality.
