Saying "therapy doesn't work for me" is kind of like saying "exercise isn't my thing" when you're trying to get in shape. Sure, it might feel true, but it's not the whole story. Therapy, like exercise, comes in many forms, and sometimes you've got to try a few different styles before you find your groove…
Let's be real, therapy can be tough. It's like looking under the hood of your car and messing with the engine. It's not always going to be smooth sailing. But just because it's tough or feels weird at first doesn't mean it's not working. It's about playing the long game!
And yeah, mental illness definitely isn't doing anyone any favors. It's like walking around with a backpack full of rocks. Sure, you can keep trudging along, but why do that when there are ways to lighten the load?
If standard talk therapy isn't cutting it, there are other options. Maybe group therapy, art therapy, CBT, or something else might click better. And sometimes, it's about more than just therapy – like tweaking your lifestyle, getting more sleep, or checking out if meds could help.
Dealing with mental health stuff is a journey. It's not one-size-fits-all, and it's definitely not a quick fix. It's about finding what works for you, even if it takes some trial and error. The important thing is not to give up and keep looking for ways to dump those rocks out of your backpack!!
An incredible person, my uncle... one of the very few in my life, who stood like a father, sharing his wisdom, guidance, & showering his encouragement. I regret having spent so little time with him. And that little time was much enriched with learning, fun, and joy. Om Shanti. 🙏
For anyone worried about talking to their white children right now—worried that their kid is too young for these conversations—I was 5 or 6 when my Dad told me “no matter what you do, some people will always hate you.” Black children don’t get to not understand racism.
