30 sec news update: Facts About The Plague?
WHAT IS THE PLAGUE & WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS?
Just to make sure you have the right info, here is What the Plague is and isn't.
🦠 The bacterium which causes plague, Yersinia Pestis, is carried by small wild mammals and their Fleas.
🦠 In Siberia, where it is endemic, it is rare for Russians to fall ill with the plague, however.
But cases occur every year in other parts of the world, notably in Africa.
⛑️ According to the Centres for Disease Control (CDC) in the US, plague has been detected in people of all ages, from babies to those aged in their 90s.
- 50% of the Cases occur in people aged 12 to 45.
- Men and women are susceptible, although it has been slightly more common among men.
THE THREE + 1 TYPES OF PLAGUE
⛑️ There are Three main types of Plague, affecting different parts of the body.
These are:
1. Bubonic
2. Septicaemic
3. Pneumonic.
4. Pharyngeal Plague
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Bubonic plague is the most common clinical form.
Symptoms include painful swollen lymph nodes or “buboes”.
Septicaemic plague Infects the Blood while Pneumonic plague affects the Lungs.
The WHO describes Septicaemic and Pneumonic Plague as “less common, but severe forms” of plague.
A Fourth type, Pharyngeal Plague, is rare. It can be contracted by eating infected meat.
⛑️ According to the US-based Cleveland Clinic, besides swollen lymph nodes in the case of bubonic plague, those infected with any of the forms of plague can display the following symptoms:
SYMPTOMS OF PLAGUE
> Fever and chills.
> Headaches and body aches.
> Weakness and fatigue.
> Dizziness.
> Nausea.
> Vomiting and diarrhoea.
⛑️ Specific symptoms for Septicaemic plague, which can occur as a complication of bubonic plague, include abdominal pain and blackness in tissues, particularly on figures, toes and the nose, according to the CDC.
⛑️ Pneumonic plague, which occurs when Bacteria from Bubonic or Septicaemic Infections reach the lungs, is accompanied by shortness of breath, chest pain, coughing and sometimes bloody mucus.
Other complications can also arise from plague if it is untreated, according to the Cleveland Clinic.
These include:
> Meningitis – a severe infection that causes
> inflammation of the lining of the brain / spinal cord.
> Tissue death and loss of limbs from gangrene.
> Respiratory failure.
> Organ failure.
Bubonic plague has a death rate of 30 to 60 percent. Pneumonic and septicaemic plague are fatal if left untreated within one to six days, the WHO says.
If identified quickly, however, all forms can be treated with antibiotics.
🏳️ HOW DOES THE PLAGUE SPREAD
⛑️ Plague most commonly spreads through the bites of fleas carried by rodents, but can also be transmitted from person to person.
According to the CDC in the US, people can also become infected through exposure to sick pets, especially cats.
⛑️ These are the main ways the disease can be transmitted:
☠ FLEA BITES
According to the CDC, people and animals can contract plague from dead rats carrying the disease, as well as being bitten by fleas that have bitten infected rats. “Dogs and cats may also bring plague-infected fleas into the home.
Flea bite exposure may result in primary bubonic plague or septicaemic plague,” the CDC states.
☠ DIRECT CONTACT
Humans can contract plague through contact with the tissue or body fluids of an infected animal. This form of exposure most commonly results in bubonic plague or septicaemic plague, according to the CDC.
☠ INFECTIOUS DROPLETS
Droplets coughed out by humans and animals infected with pneumonic plague can hang in the air and be inhaled by another person.
The CDC states that this requires direct and close contact with the person or animal with pneumonic plague, and it is the only way the disease can be transmitted from person to person.
According to the CDC, the last documented case of person-to-person pneumonic plague transmission was in 1924. However, there have been more recent cases of pneumonic plague transmitted to humans by sick cats.
☠ CATS
⛑️ “Cats are particularly susceptible to plague and can be infected by eating infected rodents.
Cats with plague pose a risk of transmitting infectious plague droplets to their owners or to veterinarians,” the CDC states.
🏴☠️ WHERE DOES THE PLAGUE EXIST TODAY?
⛑️ Ian Jones, professor of virology at the University of Reading, told The Associated Press news agency that “plague carries a huge history and is still present in many parts of the world, including Russia.”
🏴☠️ WHAT ARE THE WORLD NUMBERS EACH YEAR?
Worldwide, there are between 1,000 and 2,000 cases of plague every year, according to Cleveland Clinic in the US.
⛑️ Plague is endemic to Siberia, which is the location of the first known prehistoric human outbreak. Besides Russia, plague is also endemic in several countries, according to the WHO.
Between 2019 and 2025, most new cases recorded by the WHO occurred in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Madagascar.
🏴☠️ WHAT ARE PAST CASES?
⛑️ There have been rare cases elsewhere. In July 2025, an Arizona man who worked with cats died of pneumonic plague – the first such death since 2007.
🇺🇸 There was a major outbreak of bubonic plague in Los Angeles in 1924-1925, after it was first recorded in the US in 1900, brought by infected rats on steamships.
Bubonic plague has made up 80 percent of an average of seven cases per year in the US since then.
🇺🇸 Most of these have occurred in northern New Mexico, northern Arizona, southern Colorado, California, southern Oregon and western Nevada, according to the CDC.
🌐 WHY HAS IT TRIGGERED GLOBAL ALARM?
⛑️ While authorities in Russia have stressed that postmortem tests carried out on the woman did not detect that she had plague, the incident has raised global alarm.
🏴☠️ Several authorities have called on Russia to give more clarity about what exactly happened to the woman at the lab.
🇺🇸 In Washington, United States President Donald Trump said he was watching the situation with concern and that the US would be willing to help, though he said he had not spoken to Russian President Vladimir Putin about the situation.
“It’s a rough disease. You know, that’s a disease we used to be able to control, but somehow those microbes have gotten stronger and smarter.
They’re like an army,” Trump told reporters outside the White House.
“Even with great advancement, the germs have really become relatively stronger than they were, and things that used to work on pneumonia don’t work as well any more,” he added.
🇺🇸 US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Monday that he does not believe there is cause for alarm, but that the US is watching the case closely, aware that “it could spread quickly” despite the quarantine and other public health protocols.
Well friends, I will leave it there, I just wanted to make sure I put the right information in front of you, in case you wanted to know.
♥️ Take Care and be on the alert, and be aware that's all you can do. Wash your hands after going out, or shopping, etc, I don't need to tell you, but I'm a friend giving you a gentle reminder.

GLORY TO THE HEROES OF UKRAINE
Before everyone panics about the lab-acquired pneumonic plague infection in Russia:
This isn’t the 1300s.
We now have effective treatments (antibiotics).
At least five documented pneumonic plague outbreaks/clusters have occurred since 2011.
NONE became a pandemic.
Multiple lab-acquired plague infections have also occurred in modern history.
NONE became a pandemic.
A Russian lab worker has died and thousands are in quarantine after a plague outbreak.
The World Health Organisation says the pneumonic form of plague is especially contagious and "can trigger severe epidemics".
@SkyNewsThomas explains everything you need to know about varieties of the disease.
