4 in 10 Steam reviews on some of the biggest PC games this year came from players who bought the game somewhere else. This says a lot about how distribution actually works at the top of the market.
GameDiscoverCo pulled review data across every $1M+ Steam title from the past 12 months. The median share of off-Steam reviews sits around 12%. But on premium $60-$70 AAA releases, titles hit 40%+.
Steam is still the discovery and wishlist engine, as well as the social layer. Even players who buy elsewhere end up in that ecosystem. The data is interesting precisely because Steam is so central.
But here's the story behind said data: the studios distributing most thoughtfully aren't picking one channel. They're running both at the same time.
Steam is essential. And a direct channel sitting alongside it, owned by the studio and with full visibility into what drives each sale and who's buying, is becoming the standard.
The biggest publishers already run this way. The question is whether mid-size studios and indies can do the same without that infrastructure.
From what we've observed across dozens of Publishing Suite partners, that's exactly the gap a purpose-built direct channel is designed to fill.
