“Persevering Through Adversity”
By Kevin Burrell
“So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up.” Galatians 6:9
Baseball Coaches and Scouts
His journey to leadership was marked by repeated setbacks, disappointments, and failures. He lost multiple times, experienced business failures, suffered personal heartbreak, and endured seasons of deep discouragement and depression. Many concluded that success was not meant for him.
Yet Abraham Lincoln continued moving forward. He refused to quit. He believed that God had called him to something greater than himself.
The life of Abraham Lincoln reminds us that failure is never final. Setbacks do not determine our destiny. The path God uses to prepare leaders is often paved with adversity, hardship, and lessons learned through struggle.
Throughout Scripture, God repeatedly called imperfect people who faced overwhelming obstacles.
• Moses stuttered and doubted his ability to speak.
• David was overlooked by his own family.
• Joseph endured betrayal and imprisonment.
Yet God equipped each person for the assignment He placed before them.
God doesn’t call the qualified, He qualifies the called.
Never forget that!
The same principle was evident in Lincoln’s life. The very challenges that could have caused him to quit became part of his preparation for leading a nation through one of its darkest periods. His perseverance developed wisdom, character, humility, and resilience.
God can take your greatest “Mess” and turn it into your greatest “Message.”
Listen Closely: One hallmark of great leadership is the ability to overcome adversity. Leaders are not defined by the absence of difficulties, but by their willingness to continue when difficulties arise.
•Perseverance builds faith.
• Endurance develops character.
• Trials reveal God’s power working through your weakness.
If you are facing disappointment, discouragement, rejection or failure today, do not interpret it as the end of your story.
God’s calling is greater than your current circumstances.
The obstacles in front of you are preparing you for a greater purpose than you can presently see.
Your “little” in God’s hands, can accomplish exponentially more than it can in your hands.
Keep trusting. Keep obeying. Keep serving. Keep moving forward. Refuse to quit.
The God who called you is faithful to equip you. What He begins in you—He will complete through you.
Just ask Abraham Lincoln.
Love God. Love People. Live Sent.
Be Worth Being,
Kevin
