My son got 2nd today. And he looked his worst in the finals. And I’m not just his dad, but his coach.

We talked about the match and how he kind of reverted to his old, less advanced wrestling self. But at the end I said, “Don’t mistake criticism for negativity or disappointment. I love watching you wrestle. You have gotten a lot better and I’m really proud of you.” He fought back tears.

We need more sane wrestling dads. Wrestling is f’ing hard.

The focus of youth sports has gone from a place where kids can make friends, learn skills and have fun, to a place where *adults* feed their ego, live vicariously through their kid, and talk trash about coaches and other people’s children. Sad & pathetic

My boys could get everything they need coaching wise from Doug and be successful.

But….the thing I love about Doug is he doesn’t restrict our boys to only his knowledge base. He encourages others to work with them and encourages the boys to learn from others. He recognizes there is more than one way to teach something and his boys don’t need to wrestle the exact style he did to be successful.

Coaches who limit who their athletes work with also limit their athletes from exploring their full potential. If you are worried about your athlete learning something you don’t teach, a different variation of a move, you aren’t truly making it about the athlete…. You’re making it about you.

Doug continues to learn alongside our boys, asking questions, being open to change and trusting those around him with enough space to do the same. This only betters the relationships he develops as a coach with his athletes and his relationship as a father with his boys.

There’s nothing more scarier than a coach who thinks he has nothing to learn and everything needed to teach.

Today in Virginia, Shabazz won the NHSCA National title for juniors in the 106 weight class. He won 5-4 in the final.
