1. The British tried to restrict ownership after some unpopular decisions were made after they won the French and Indian War.
2. Most of US history was expanding into land that was dangerous and you needed a weapon to be safe. You aren't dealing with wildlife unarmed.

@tanpukunokami cub scout camp, a .22 rifle. Once I became a boy scout used a shotgun for skeet shooting. While I could hit a target consistently within a penny with a rifle, I was not good at skeet shooting.
