Galera dizendo que o U2 “já não é mais o mesmo” porque a banda mudou e tal, e isso e aquilo…Meu amigo, o U2 praticamente nunca foi o mesmo por muito tempo e desde sempre.

Boy (1980) e October (1981) são praticamente uma coisa só. War (1983) já começa a mudar tudo. The Unforgettable Fire (1984) muda de novo. Achtung Baby (1991) praticamente reinventa a banda e Zooropa (1993) leva essa reinvenção ainda mais longe. Depois disso, aí sim, veio uma longa fase de relativa continuidade.

O U2 sempre mudou. O que mudou foi a frequência com que isso aconteceu.

1968年、ベトナム戦争や学生運動、各国の抗議デモが盛んだった時期にジョンが書いた。

「You say you want a revolution」で始まるように、当時の変革を求める空気を直接取り上げた。

一方で「when you talk about destruction / Don’t you know that you can count me out」（破壊の話をするなら、俺はカウントアウトしてくれ）という歌詞で、暴力的な革命には距離を置く姿勢を示した。

ジョンは後年、「これは政治に対する自分の基本的な態度だ。歌詞は今でも生きている」と述べている。
