In this documentary, we delve into @Sterling_Bankng’s journey, from a merger of multiple banks to a tech-driven, customer first institution.
What does transformation in the banking industry look like over the past 2 decades? Find out here: https://t.co/1IKQ9j5B0u
Someone reached out to me on Tiktok and this was this message, “Please I need your financial advice. I am in serious debt of about N5M and my monthly salary is 350K”
The first question I asked him was why he took the loan(Was it due to an emergency, business loss, lifestyle choices, or something else?). This is important to address the root cause and not just give advice on how to pay the debt while falling back into the same situation and repeating the cycle.
Now I went further to share this with him:
Create a Debt Repayment Plan
With a ₦350K salary and ₦5M debt, here’s a structured approach:
a. List all your debts – amounts, interest rates, and deadlines.
b. Negotiate with creditors – You may be able to restructure your payments for lower monthly installments.
c. Prioritize payments: Use either:
- Avalanche Method – Pay high-interest debts first.
- Snowball Method – Start with the smallest debt for motivation.
Commit XYZ amount to paying off the debt monthly
You can't use all your salary to pay off debt hence you will keep taking on other debts to survive.
Avoid Taking on More Debt
- Build an Emergency Fund: Even if you start with ₦10K monthly, it prevents future borrowing.
- Live Below Your Means: Cut unnecessary expenses so you don’t rely on debt for daily needs.
- Lifestyle Adjustment: There is a need to adjust lifestyle during this period of debt repayment.
- Increase Your Income: Consider side gigs, freelancing, or selling unused items to free up more money for debt repayment.
Stay Consistent and Disciplined
Clearing ₦5M won’t happen overnight, but with a focused plan and some sacrifices, you’ll make steady progress.
Pray
Never underestimate the power of prayer too. I have heard of people whose debts have been miraculously cleared. While that may not be your case, God can give you an idea of what to do that will bring in the money to pay off the debt faster than you imagine.
I couldn't go more in-depth into specific advice because certain parameters were not made known. If it were to be a one-on-one session it would have been detailed.
I worked with someone last year to pay off a huge debt.

You work hard. You earn money. But somehow… it’s never enough.
If that sounds familiar, you’re not alone. Many people fall into hidden money traps that keep them stuck—without even realizing it.
Let's look at a few common ones:
𝐋𝐢𝐟𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐲𝐥𝐞 𝐈𝐧𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 – The more you earn, the more you spend. That new job, raise, or bonus should increase your wealth, not just your expenses. Your expenses will want to rise to meet your income, but no panic 🥱 keep tabs on your expenses.
𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐮𝐥𝐬𝐞 𝐒𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 – Small, frequent purchases add up. A little here, a little there… and suddenly, you realize you have spent #500,000 on small chops in a year. Practice the 72-hour rule.
𝐁𝐚𝐝 𝐃𝐞𝐛𝐭 – Borrowing for things that lose value (instead of assets that grow) keeps you in a cycle of financial stress. Stop borrowing to upgrade your lifestyle, that's not financially smart.
𝐈𝐠𝐧𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐈𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 – Saving is good, but if your money isn’t working for you, inflation is eating away at its value. Start your investment journey today with as little as #5,000.
𝐒𝐮𝐛𝐬𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐎𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐥𝐨𝐚𝐝 – Gym memberships, streaming services, software tools… that you are not using actively are silently draining your finances.
If you’re serious about breaking free, awareness is the first step. The next step? Taking action.
Which of these money traps have you seen (or fallen for)? Let’s discuss in the comments!
