A 12-year-old boy was fatally shot by a stray bullet outside a Bronx bodega on Saturday while riding his bike on a simple errand.

Jacob Freytes was struck and later died. Police arrested 45-year-old William Ferrer, a suspect with a lengthy criminal record including at least half a dozen prior arrests dating back to 1999. He faces murder and related charges.

The timing has fueled sharp criticism of Mayor Zohran Mamdani. Just weeks earlier, the democratic socialist mayor visited Rikers Island to watch a World Cup match alongside inmates. Critics are asking why outreach to prisoners appears to outrank keeping repeat offenders off the streets.

This matters because it crystallizes a core debate in American cities: whether progressive priorities on incarceration and policing leave ordinary residents, especially children, more vulnerable. When a free career criminal ends a child’s life on a neighborhood errand, the gap between stated compassion and actual safety becomes impossible to ignore.
