This year’s theme focuses on the Human Rights of Deaf People. We recognise sign language, promote deaf community and culture, encourage deaf inclusion and raise awareness for companies to support the deaf.
4. As a linguistic minority, D/deaf people and their culture are unique. Promoting, protecting, and preserving their diversity and language encourages their participation in spaces and strengthens the social relation between them and hearing people.
3. Sign language interpreting helps Deaf and hearing people communicate, and in Pakistan, it’s not legally required. The availability of sign language interpreters removes language barriers between them and helps the deaf be recognised for their language, culture, and diversity.
2. For a Deaf individual’s development, it is critical to gain early access to sign language, including quality education in sign language. Without adequate access to education, information or basic services in their language, Deaf communities are inclined to be marginalised.
1. Sign language and spoken language are not same but equal. Sign language is a visual language that uses movements and expression to convey meaning between people. For over 10 million Pakistanis living with some level of hearing loss, it’s a tool to feel connected with society.
International Day of Sign Languages marks a day where sign language is globally recognised, and Deaf people, their cultural and linguistic identity are celebrated. Take a step and join our cause, and let’s aim today to make our society embracing of their uniqueness. #IDSL2020
In Pakistan, there are over 10 million people who are living with some degree of hearing loss. For them, Pakistani Sign Language (PSL) is the main means of communication that is used to connect them with our society and each other. #IDSL2020 2/2
