United Nations -
Deputy Fund Manager @ the
Lebanon Humanitarian Fund of the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs(UN-OCHA)
In Sour/Tyre and Saida this week we heard from displaced families whose lives have been shaped by repeated displacement. Some have been unable to return home since 2023, because their houses were destroyed and many cannot access their land. 1/2
.@antonioguterres is deeply concerned by the escalation of Israeli military operations in southern #Lebanon, particularly in and around Nabatieh.
He condemns the mounting civilian casualties, incl. women and children killed and injured in the attacks:

The Lebanon Flash Appeal ended yesterday.
We stretched every dollar, reaching 1.2M people with lifesaving support since March.
But it was only half funded. Needs persist, access remains constrained and many families still cannot return home safely. The crisis is not over.
Humanitarian conditions remain fragile amid continued military activity, insecurity, displacement & impediments to return. Civilians and responders continue to face significant protection risks. Funding shortfalls continue to affect response capacity.

Yesterday in South🇱🇧, I stood alongside humanitarians serving communities under immense pressure
They do not ask to be celebrated. They should never have to risk their own lives to save others
That is the message this #WorldHumanitarianDay
Protect humanitarians #ActForHumanity
Devastating reports from Ansar today, where children are again among those killed.
Children and civilians continue to pay an unacceptable price. International humanitarian law is clear: civilians must be protected at all times.
This violence must end.
Great visit to #Tyre w/ @UNTourism_SG Shaikha AlNowais &Minister @Lauralahoud. Sustainable tourism,-given the remarkable history, setting, people and culture of Tyre-is a key driver for jobs and recovery.
Displaced families also told us of the need for safety, stability and jobs
When hostilities force families from their homes, access to food becomes critical.
Supported by the Lebanon Humanitarian Fund, Order of Malta Lebanon distributed nutritious breakfast meals in Beirut 🇱🇧.
Fact check:
The World Food Programme does not purchase food in Lebanon to transport or for use outside the country.
Locally procured food supports WFP programmes in Lebanon only.
To avoid pressure on local markets during the current crisis, WFP imports food assistance while applying strict “do no harm” safeguards.
During times of stability or when conditions allow, WFP procures locally to support the Lebanese economy and benefit local producers and suppliers.
More people are returning home, but over 57,000 remain in 516 collective shelters. Returns must be safe, voluntary and dignified.

After the latest ceasefire announcement, some families displaced by months of hostilities are beginning to return home, while others are moving closer to areas of origin waiting for conditions to improve before making a final decision.

🧵1/3 Visited Saida, South Lebanon 🇱🇧 today with @Herve_Magro@CaroitEleonore 🇫🇷, @JennyChapman 🇬🇧, @OCHALebanon & partners, we heard firsthand from families who have endured repeated displacement and trauma.
Displaced families continue returning to southern areas since the announcement of the regional ceasefire. However, more than 106,000 people remain in collective shelters across the country, and many more remain displaced outside of them.

Despite challenging conditions, a growing number of families are going back with the hope of staying, even as they face ongoing insecurity, widespread destruction and limited access to basic services.

The humanitarian situation is deteriorating in Tyre, South 🇱🇧, with displacement orders nearly affecting 44,000 people.
An airstrike near a Lebanese Red Cross centre killed 5 people & injured 8 others, including 4 paramedics.

📍 In Dekwaneh, Mount Lebanon 🇱🇧 the Ambassador of Norway @Hharaldstad and the Humanitarian Coordinator @Imran_Riza met families displaced by conflict, living in a collective shelter, speaking about loss, uncertainty and urgent needs.
Roads heavily congested as families flee after threat of airstrikes.
Shelters in Tyre and Saida are full, with scores of displaced people in open areas.
Authorities and humanitarian partners are coordinating a response.
🔗Latest Humanitarian Update:https://t.co/a2EnttfZco
The reality on the ground in Lebanon has been deeply alarming.
Civilians – including humanitarian workers, medical teams and first responders – must be protected at all times.

3/3 In Hay El-Selom, residents shared devastating stories of loss, trauma &survival.
One man told us he was out on an errand when one of the strikes on 8 April destroyed his house, killing his wife, son and the two displaced families he was sheltering.
