It really is important to note the specific order in which information is conveyed by the narrative.
Previously I highlighted how Geto began calling non-sorcerers "monkeys" BEFORE finding out that they are the source of curses, and before Haibara's death and Geto's mission to Mimiko and Nanako's village.
Look now at how "Satoru became "the strongest" PRECEDES Geto fixating on the grind of exorcism, asking for whom he is putting himself through this. Geto had always known of humanity's ugliness—that didn't stop him from doing his duty until now. What changed?
I believe that if it were primarily his attachment to Riko, she would have appeared in his memory. Instead, it is the cultists who appear. And again, before that, Geto is ruminating on Gojo surpassing him.
My interpretation is that Geto was previously motivated to do his duty by his own status as one of "the strongest". Protecting the ugly and weak was tolerable because it was proof he was strong. But he is no longer "the strongest", so the ugly and the weak are reduced to "monkeys".

MV: 네, 좋은 레이스였습니다. 미디엄 타이어를 사용한 첫 번째 스틴트는 조금 힘들었지만, 그래도 잘 헤쳐나가며 3위까지 올라섰고 재출발도 잘해서 2위로 올라섰습니다. 그 이후로는 격차가 1초, 1.1초 정도로 유지되었죠. 그리고 마지막 바퀴에서 옐로우 플래그가 떴을 때, 조지가 한 코너에서 부스트를 약간 잃은 것 같아 격차를 제법 줄일 수 있었습니다. 피니시 라인까지 바짝 추격하긴 했지만, 역전하기엔 조금 부족했��니다.
Q: 하지만 막스, 모든 걸 쏟아부으셨잖아요. 벽에 몇 번���나 아슬아슬하게 스치기도 했고요. 특히 그 마지막 순간은 불안했나요, 아니면 제어 가능한 수준이었나요?
MV: 괜찮았습니다. 코너를 조금 넓게 쓰려다 과했던 것 같은데, 타이어 상태는 문제없었습니다.
