@SABCNews_Radio Rhodes university has made students unsafe! Silencing them with violence and unlawful detention during a peaceful protest! Taking down the WiFi so that they remain disconnected from online activities and publication of the horrific actions against them! Shame on Rhodes!!!!
Black students at Rhodes University are being shot at with rubber bullets, choked by teargas, and bundled into police vans. Their only crime? Demanding a fair chance to one day walk onto that exact same stage.

@Rhodes_Uni Peaceful protesting students were shot at and detained by SAPS!!!! No calm! Only silencing!!! Students have a right to protest @eNCA@ewnupdates@News24
The issue is that students were peacefully sitting on the grass opposite the Monument, exercising their right to protest. They were not blocking the entrance or disrupting the ceremony itself. Yet Rhodes University deployed SAPS to start shooting at the students & run after them
@HistorySAZAR This is Rhodes University early hours of today. Ohh Hector 50 years later black students are still fighting for an inclusive education system
Police fire rubber bullets and deploy tear gas as Rhodes University students protest the proposed 2027 Student Debt Protocol, which requires students with outstanding debt to pay 50% upfront or at least R3,000 a month under a payment arrangement.
