The regime wants to intervene in the U.S. midterm elections by inflicting a political defeat on President Trump. It sees higher oil prices as its principal instrument for achieving that objective. As a result, the regime will escalate tensions in the weeks leading up to the election specially the closer we get to November, regardless of any ongoing diplomatic efforts. I doubt diplomacy alone will change that calculus.

High gasoline prices pose a significant political risk to the President’s coalition. The best solution is regime change but there is little evidence Washington considers it before November. In its absence, the United States’ only realistic option is to intensify Operation Project Freedom to get enough oil through Hormuz to control the price and strike the regime hard enough to prevent it from executing its plan efficiently enough to influence the U.S. election. That requires expanding the targets set beyond drone and missile installations and decimate the regime’s political, military, and security chain of command and centers.

Hoping that the regime will behave is not realistic.
