This studio gibhli stuff is so depressing. It seems that there’s a new breed of ‘artist’ that invests absolutely nothing into their creative process. You can’t type a string of words into a prompt a couple of times and pretend it’s an artistic process.
re: ai, you people don’t love making things you love having things and capitalism has convinced you that ownership is self actualization and it’s not and that’s why you’re empty inside
Since Studio Ghibli is trending, worth noting the mind-boggling effort Hayao Miyazaki and his team put into a film.
Each has 60k-70k frames, all hand-drawn and painted with water color.
This 4-second clip (“The Wind Rises”) took one animator 15 months to do.
In the documentary “10 Years with Hayao Miyazaki”, the legendary Japanese filmmaker talks to one of his animators (Eiji Yamamori) after they complete the crowd scene.
The exchange is gold:
▫️Miyazaki: “Good job.”
▫️Yamamori: “It’s so short, though”
▫️Miyazaki: “But it was worth it.”
The animator gets a second of joy (he’s pumped) but on to the next.

watching a famously anti-fascist environmentalist creator’s artstyle co-opted to sanction literal fascist propaganda…it’s a pure distillation of evil perverting good. I am full of rage
don't like the ghibli trend. idk man. something about a particular artist's meticulously crafted style being turned into a mass-market on-demand commodity. it doesn't sit right.
is this how it's gonna be from now on? anything good in the world being taken for parts to make slop?
