At what point do we stop and ask a very serious question?

With ongoing public debate, concerns and criticism surrounding COVID-19 vaccination policies, why does the government continue to pursue their inclusion in national immunisation programs?

This is about more than one vaccine, one policy or one particular government. It is about something considerably bigger: the extent to which individuals retain control over decisions concerning their own bodies and their own health.

Surely, in a free society, informed consent must remain fundamental. Every individual should have the right to understand the potential benefits, risks and alternatives of a medical intervention before making a personal decision about whether to accept it.

But there is an even more important question.

What safeguards exist to prevent future governments from going further?

What protections are in place to ensure that vulnerable people, particularly the elderly and those who may have difficulty advocating for themselves, cannot be subjected to medical interventions against their wishes?

These are not questions that should be dismissed as unreasonable, political or inconvenient. They go directly to the principles of bodily autonomy, informed consent, transparency and individual liberty.

Governments have an enormous responsibility when making decisions that affect public health. But individuals also have fundamental rights when those decisions affect their own bodies.

Public health and personal autonomy should not be treated as opposing principles.

We should be able to demand both.

Because once society becomes comfortable with the idea that medical decisions can be made for people rather than with people, the question is no longer simply about one vaccine.

It becomes a question about where the boundary is, and who gets to decide where that boundary ends.
