Throughout history, Ukrainians have worn Vyshyvankas for special occasions, such as weddings and various holidays. However, in recent years, embroidered shirts have found renewed popularity among Ukrainians who style them with everyday outfits like jeans and jackets.
Every year on the third Thursday of May, Ukrainians celebrate Vyshyvanka Day. Vyshyvanka is the Ukrainian word for an embroidered shirt or dress – a central piece to traditional Ukrainian clothing.

Today is Vyshyvanka Day, celebrating the traditional Ukrainian embroidered shirt.
Visible or invisible, it is always under a defender's pixel, a rescuer's uniform, a medic's coat, a power engineer's jacket, a volunteer, a teacher, or anyone who holds the defense.
Our children have known it since infancy. It represents the unity of all generations of Ukrainians over the centuries. Its pattern is unique because it is embroidered by our own actions on a canvas of our values.
Over the years of our resistance to aggression, it has become an informal uniform for all those who defend humanity, freedom, and the right to self-identity.
Happy Vyshyvanka Day to Ukraine, all Ukrainians, and Ukraine’s friends around the world! 🇺🇦
Dior the cat was just evacuated from Vilcha, right next to Vovchansk, also under heavy shelling.
His human mom showed me their house, saying she will probably never see it again. I couldn't ask her name because we had to leave in a rush, following an imminent shelling threat.
The vast majority of evacuees are the elderly & people with disabilities. It is heartbreaking to witness, they flee their homes for the 2nd time, after Russia already occupied their towns back in 2022.
Those women & Oleksandr, an official from Vovchansk, just arrived.
