Open Letter on the Urgent Need for Protection of Eritrean Refugees, Particularly Women and Children

Dear Esteemed Egyptian Authorities,

As International Women’s Day, a day dedicated to celebrating the achievements of women and advocating for their rights worldwide, approaches on March 8th, we, the Eritrean Women Organization, write to draw your attention to the urgent plight of Eritrean refugees currently residing in Egypt, particularly the women and children among them. For many years, Egypt has been a sanctuary for countless Eritreans fleeing conflict, persecution, and human rights abuses in their home country. However, the situation has drastically changed, and the safety and dignity of these vulnerable individuals—especially women and children—are increasingly at risk. 

Women and children represent a significant portion of refugees and often face unique challenges that require urgent attention. As they navigate a complex and often hostile environment, they are disproportionately affected by violence, exploitation, and discrimination. Reports indicate that Eritrean women refugees in Egypt experience various forms of harassment, including verbal abuse, physical violence, and labor exploitation, all exacerbated by their uncertain legal status. With the ongoing influx of refugees from neighboring countries, including those fleeing the conflicts in Sudan, the situation for Eritrean refugees has become increasingly precarious. Many are left without legal status and face the constant threat of detention and deportation. These conditions not only endanger their physical safety but also undermine their mental and emotional well-being.

The Need for Immediate Action
As we honor the resilience and strength of women around the world on this significant day, we implore the Egyptian authorities to take decisive action to ensure the protection of Eritrean refugees. We call for:

1. Enhanced Legal Protections: Immediate measures to expedite the processing of refugee applications for Eritrean women and children, ensuring they receive fair and timely assessments of their status.
2. Safe Haven: Implementation of policies that prioritize the safety of Eritrean refugees, specifically protecting women and children from violence, exploitation, and the risk of deportation to Eritrea.
3. Support Services: Development of comprehensive support services for Eritrean refugees, including access to legal aid, healthcare, and psychological support, to address the unique needs of women and children.
4. Community Engagement: Foster partnerships with NGOs and community organizations to create safe spaces for Eritrean women and children and to provide resources that empower them.

Conclusion
International Women’s Day is not only a celebration but also a call to action. We urge the Egyptian authorities to seize this opportunity to reaffirm their commitment to human rights and the protection of the most vulnerable members of our global community. 
As you reflect on the significance of this day, we hope you will take concrete steps to uphold the dignity, safety, and rights of Eritrean refugees in Egypt. Together, we can create a safer and more inclusive environment for all women and children, regardless of their circumstances.
