Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni described the situation in the Gaza Strip as “dramatic and unjustifiable,” reaffirming that while Israel has the right to defend itself, such a right must always comply with international humanitarian law and protect the civilian population.

She called for an immediate ceasefire, stating that the bombings must stop to ensure the survival and rights of civilians.

Meloni confirmed she had “often difficult conversations” with Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu, during which she insisted on respect for international law and the urgent need to halt hostilities.

She reiterated that Italy continues to work with European, Arab, UN, and U.S. partners to promote a negotiated solution that leads to peace and a two-state solution.

She emphasized Italy’s commitment to providing humanitarian aid: over 110 tons of food and medical supplies through the “Food for Gaza” initiative, the use of helicopters for humanitarian airlifts, the evacuation of civilians including 14 children, and the allocation of funds to provide immediate humanitarian assistance.

She also announced support for a future reconstruction program, based on a model proposed by Arab countries, aimed at stabilizing the Strip and restoring civil and economic normalcy.

Opposition parties called for a stronger condemnation of Netanyahu and the suspension of arms exports to Israel—demands rejected by the current government majority.

Meloni responded that, although she does not agree with certain Israeli decisions, Italy remains convinced that the war was not started by Israel, but rather by Hamas terrorism, including the hostage kidnappings, which triggered the escalation.
