In case you missed it at the end of last week, we released our citizen science report on Friday, titled The Ripple Effect.
This is very much a first step in empowering communities around the nation to monitor, and report on water quality, so we can build up an accurate picture of what we are swimming, surfing and paddling in.

🧪🚨 UK bathing waters are awash with antibiotic-resistant bacteria, pesticides, and harmful chemicals, posing a risk to public health and the environment. It’s more than just E-coli.
A new study conducted by citizen scientists in collaboration with Watershed Investigations, SAS and the University of York shows our beloved bathing waters contain antibiotic-resistant genes, making life-saving meds less effective. 😳
These resistance genes, found in rivers and lakes, could lead to the development of superbugs, particularly in areas with high bacteria levels like E-coli, which were found to be up to 20 times higher than deemed safe in the US.
⚠️ The study highlights the cocktail of harmful bacteria, drugs and genetic materials, including pesticides and ‘forever chemicals’ like PFAS, which could cause long-term environmental and health impacts.
The health of our oceans, lakes, and rivers is in danger – and it’s time we demand more than just the bare minimum from regulators. 🛑 It’s time to flush out the pollutants and protect our waters.

While there are still flood alerts and a lot of water in floodplains, river levels have gone down and there are no longer flood warnings in force in the south east.
Our field teams are still hard at work, starting to take down flood barriers and pumps and clear storm debris.
In November @patlinberg hoped for views like this from Teddington Footbridge, and she did 😍 as nature surpassed herself with fabulous colours of dawn skies.

🚨Our new research with @theriverstrust shows 85% of English rivers are polluted with bee-killing neonicotinoid pesticides. 🐝This will be harming wildlife in waters across the country.
We need to see:
🚫No more 'emergency use' for the sugar industry
🧑🌾Better rewards for farmers switching from harmful pesticides
🐶The ban extended to flea and tick treatments
💪Well resourced regulators to make pollutors pay
💧A strong strategy to reduce upstream chemical river pollution
