My comment to @FT@JKynge on 10 years of China's Belt and Road:
BRI was China's global public goods offer to the world. On much-needed infrastructure finance, it delivered✅
But finance also brought moral hazard issues 🛑- and that model will shift.

China’s global development finance is in a state of transformation. In our latest podcast, @YunnanChen and Teal Emery unpack the shift from mega infrastructure to green finance, and why closing the information gap is urgent for stakeholders.

@YunnanChen and I explored the changing dynamics of the Sri Lanka - China relationship under the new government of Sri Lanka. One of the major features is Chinese capital flows to Sri Lanka shifting from debt financing to investment. Sinopec refinery is one such example.

We'll be releasing new research from @tianyiwu530 & @YunnanChen which examines the behaviours of Chinese commercial creditors.
It finds they are more costly and risk-averse, offer less concessional financing.

𝗝𝗮𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝗖. 𝗦𝗰𝗼𝘁𝘁 passed away on July 19. He was a political scientist and specialist in Southeast Asia. He was a dissident within Political Science. Yet his books opened up lines of research on central issues, such as the exercise of power and resistance to power.👇
This week, Eric and Cobus are joined by Lina Benabdallah, Yunnan Chen, and Yu-Shan Wu, who recently published papers exploring the emergence of non-Western-centric narratives of Chinese engagement in Africa.

🥳Our special issue is out! "The Belt and Road Initiative and Dynamics of Structural Transformation" OpenAccess intro 👇https://t.co/ZdcCehZNad A multi-year labour of love w/t @lindacalab & Rhys Jenkins, @EADI editors @AntoAndreoni, and brilliant scholars. 🧵of 7 papers:
“What are Africa’s China narratives? A survey by Afrobarometer between 2019 and mid-2021 across 34 countries showed that 62% of Africans see China’s influence in Africa as positive, similar to the 60% who said so in the case of the US. This suggests that US-China rivalry may not constitute an either-or dilemma for ordinary African citizens, but rather a win-win situation.”

#Publication Glad to share this @APRI_Africa and @BKHS_Stiftung collection of briefs questioning the importance of tracking and interrogating the construction, diffusion and purpose of #narratives in China-Africa relations amidst global power shifts.
https://t.co/qIUUJq6o5v
China’s growing influence in Africa is often framed as a threat. At least this is a popular narrative held in Europe and in the US. However, how are these narratives constructed and diffused? What are Africa-China narratives held amongst Africans? Furthermore, how do narratives impact international cooperation?
We are excited to investigate these questions in the APRI publication "Exploring the Role of Narratives in China-Africa Relations" - produced in partnership with @BKHS_Stiftung. The publication builds on the international conference "From "workshop of the world" to "systemic rival"? hosted in Hamburg in the spring of 2023 and is authored by: @folasoule, @LBenabdallah, @stadenesque, @YunnanChen and @yushan_wu
We are grateful for the collaboration that made this publication possible and was led by the APRI executive director, Dr. @loomnie and Dr. Elisabeth Winter, Program Director Global Markets and Social Justice at BKHS.
