The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office received a all that a man, Mario Camacho (27) had barricaded himself in a bedroom with a 7 year old child and was armed with a knife.

When deputies arrived, they heard the child screaming and forced entry. The deputy who's body camera is shown here drew his Gen5 Glock 45 MOS wearing a Holosun EPS red dot and Nightstick WML from his Safariland retention holster, entered the room, and shot Mario in the t-box (despite the helmet obscuring the shot) preventing him from hurting the child and saving taxpayers millions of dollars.

I’m heartbroken to learn that Bobby Nivens of Wilmington has passed away.

Y’all may not be familiar with his name - but if you’ve ever been to Carolina Beach, you’ve eaten at his restaurant: Britt’s Donuts.

My family has been enjoying their donuts for 3 generations. And not just the Wilmington half of my family, the hillbillies too.

I can remember my Papaw setting me up on that counter when I was just a little thing… waiting on our donuts to come out of the fryer.

I’ve introduced more friends to that shop than I can count. Eaten more of their donuts than there are grains of sand. And spent more time in line waiting to place an order than I have at any other restaurant.

There really just aren’t words… we’ve lost a NC legend, y’all. 💔😭

The Appalachian Mountain range is MASSIVE. It extends from Canada all the way down to Alabama, includes 13 states, is home to 26.3 million people, and encompasses more than 206,000 square miles.

But when people say “Appalachia” they’re not just pointing to a geographical location. They’re speaking about a culture.

The defining and prevalent Appalachian culture is Southern Appalachian culture. It’s coal mines, moonshine, pulp mills, bluegrass, and hillbillies.

Though that thrills me because I am the stereotypical hillbilly in many ways, I can understand that being frustrating to those who don’t fit the bill.

In such a large region, it’s normal for cultural varieties to appear. Just look at the South. North Carolina culture looks very different from Louisiana culture.

And yet, when people talk about the South they paint us all with the same broad brush, ignoring the subtle differences between each state’s individual culture.

The same is true for Appalachia.

Even before it was a law, it was an unwritten law where I live.

I have a story about this.

My mom died on Thursday. The entire family came from across North Carolina and afar to gather. My aunts and cousins came from Gastonia, North Carolina. They were all gathered all day Friday and Saturday with my father and the rest of our family. It was getting late on Saturday evening and the Gastonia contingent headed back to their hotel.

The funeral for my mom was Sunday morning. Sometime during the night, my Aunt Mary Nell tragically passed away in her sleep. Her son (my cousin) was a very well known and respected North Carolina State Highway Trooper. From the moment the local N.C. Troopers found out, they gathered to protect her. They stood outside the hotel room door and guarded it. When arrangements were made to take her back to Gastonia, the funeral home cleared the route with the North Carolina State Highway Patrol and out of respect for my cousin and our family, every Trooper on the route, picked up the mantra and lead her drive back. Cars stopped for miles, on small two lane roads, on highways, and through towns, they pulled over and gave their respect. It was the most touching thing I have ever witnessed.

For those that don’t know, that’s a 200+ mile drive through about 11 counties.
