Why are we doing this?

A crippling ice storm occurred last weekend across far northern lower Michigan. This ice storm knocked power out to over 250,000 Michiganders, and as of 7:30pm today, 45,000 people remain without power.

Upon speaking with “boots on the ground”, we realized that there was NOT enough help, supplies, or food being brought into the area to help area residents.

We took it upon ourselves to launch a GoFundMe in support of our fellow neighbors. We initially raised $6,000 which we took and purchased several pallets of food & items which we deployed to Gaylord yesterday to distribute.

It wasn’t enough. It’s not enough. Several other nearby communities still need help, and we’re planning to get help back up there this upcoming week.

High Wind Gusts Likely, Friday, February 28th, 2025

As our low pressure arrives from the northwest, snow will move in for many of our areas in the UP. For everyone else, wind will be the theme. When not gusting, winds will likely be sustained over 20 MPH for everywhere in the state beside the eastern half of the UP. These sustained winds will be out of the southwest to start the day, before switching to out of the northwest by 7-10 PM Friday night. This will allow cold air to also funnel in, freezing any roads that are wet, primarily north of I-96.

We expect most of the state to see gusts to around 35-45 MPH, with some spots topping out around 50 MPH. There's also an outside chance we see a rain squall tomorrow, which may produce an isolated gust up near 55-59 MPH, but only between 10 AM and 4 PM for the areas in red. These conditions are favorable enough to send you on a scavenger hunt for your trash can, as indicated in our wind-o-meter graphic earlier this afternoon.

Near-blizzard like conditions are possible for those near the Mackinac Bridge where snow is falling in large amounts. We will have our traffic forecast maps released later tonight for your traveling on Friday.
