My sense is that these seeming persistent attacks against South Africa have, in fact, relatively little to do with South Africa specifically, even though South Africa is specifically targeted and will pay the cost of these attacks. South Africa has become the bogeyman in certain conservative/white nationalist circles in the US as the natural end state of the kinds of woke/Diversity, Equity and Inclusion policies that the Administration is really at war with.

Though he runs the Domestic Policy Council, Stephen Miller's fingerprints are all over Rubio's new sanctions today. The fear that South Africa represents is that maybe not in this generation, but the children and grandchildren's generations of today's white majority will be minorities in their own country, inhabiting second class status, and presumably, subject to violence by those who now constitute the majority, which in the case of the US would be mostly brown, 'non-heritage Americans.' The challenge for South Africa is they are being whipsawed by a domestic political debate that has little to do with our foreign policy. As such, Pretoria's leaders and diplomats have no tools to manage or respond to a domestic policy debate in the US and certainly not one as historically and politically charged as this.

Zambia has lost one of its liberation-era military giants.

Lt Gen Peter Dingiswayo Zuze, Zambia’s first indigenous Air Force Commander, died in Lusaka on Monday after an illness. He was 83.
A declassified US diplomatic cable from January 1979 reveals a fascinating chapter of his https://t.co/24CK4cJ6X3 a time when Rhodesian forces were carrying out raids inside Zambia, the US Embassy in Lusaka described Zuze’s removal from command as “significant”, saying it reflected growing tensions between President Kenneth Kaunda and the military.

The cable said Zuze “apparently was willing to stand up for the military” and speculated that his differences with Kaunda may have contributed to his replacement. Academic research also records rumours that Zuze’s removal was linked to his alleged dissatisfaction with Zambia’s policy of non-retaliation against Rhodesian attacks.
Zuze belonged to a generation of Zambian military leaders who found themselves on the frontline as Zambia paid a heavy price for supporting the liberation of Zimbabwe and the rest of Southern Africa.
