OF Nick Groves (@IlliniBaseball) is an under the radar name to follow this spring. Began his career at Niagara, where he earned an every day role as a true Freshman. In 2023, Groves hit .339/.504/.421 with 11 XBH, 22 RBIs, 21 SB and more BB (57) than Ks (39). Followed suit with a more productive Sophomore year in which he hit .326/.448/.460 with 18 XBH, 38 RBIs, 19 SB and an equal K:BB ratio. Also enjoyed a strong 24-game stint on the Cape this summer in which he posted a .364/.512/.394 slash line with a pair of XBH, 14 RBIs and 10 SB.

At 5'11" and 180-lbs, Groves is slightly undersized with an average build. Crouched stance in the box with an ear-high handset and slightly open front side. Groves has a minimal load with an ultra-small stride. Short, compact stroke in which he takes a direct path to contact. Quick hands. Slash-and-dash look.

Groves' carrying tool is his pure hit-ability. Contact skills are comfortably plus, and last spring Groves worked a 91% overall contact rate with a 94% overall IZ contact rate. On the Cape, he maintained a 90% overall IZ contact rate. Swing decisions and pitch recognition skills are also excellent, and Groves' chase rate was a minuscule 12% in both the spring and summer. Hardly any swings came outside of the shadow zone.

Furthermore, Groves has outstanding hand-eye coordination and a highly advanced feel for the barrel. Sees pitches deep, uses the entire field and—for as cliche as this might sound—hits the pitch where it's thrown. Can just flick balls wherever he wants. 60 hit for me. The extent of Groves' offensive profile is his hit tool, as his raw power is well below-average.

Groves is a solid athlete and plus runner, and both traits translate well to the OF. Gap-to-gap range with good route running skills. Can go and get it a little bit. Arm is fringy, though, and he could end up in LF when all is said and done. As mentioned, Groves is a plus runner and en effective base-stealer. Speeds the game up/puts pressure on opposing defenses.

Groves is reminiscent of former Minnesota OF Brett Bateman. Projects to be selected somewhere in the 8th-12th round range.
