@glassbottommeg Way to go! I’ve dropped out of the indie game dev side of things as it’s crazy difficult to make a living with it. Jumped to tabletop games, learned mold making and casting in the last year, have shipped like 50k resin miniatures o_O will be 40 next year too.
@zapakitul@LateTide Ungh, have you been sucked into that market now? The 1bit stuff is sweet though.
Wish I had time to play with old platforms, pivoting out of most of my skill set and learning a different one, is a major time sink alas.
@zapakitul Not bad, slowly leveling up as a mold maker as Ive now produced and shipped around 15k table top resin miniatures.
Miss indie dev, but not trying to make a living doing it ;)
@Enichan Years playing..
Years creating and working on private servers..
Years working on Legends of Aria..
Ungh yeah UO certainly shaped a good chunk of my life
So in a pivot from the endless battle of indie game dev, I've become involved in table top miniatures development and also 3D printing.

@zapakitul God I blow at those. Last job I took with Citadel working on a mmorpg.. we didn’t even have a technical interview. Owner could tell I knew my stuff from just a casual chat on the phone. Why can’t have more of those type of interviews? lol
@Enichan I’d say just use C++ unless you really have a reason not too. You can throw out/ignore tons of it as well. Every console after the 3DS also has pretty much supported most of C++ 11 or later. I would say 14 is fairly safe at this point.
@Enichan I guess also put another way. Indie game dev as a biz is really brutal, and not much remote contract work exists these days that is all that interesting to me.
Embedded stuff is cool but doesn’t usually pay great and seems hard to come by as a remote dev too.
@Enichan Honestly, 80% of it these days just feels like labor to me. Seems like few areas left a solo remote based dev can play in and also make a profit with. Web apps killed desktop dev, and Unity/Unreal, plus good open source libs have killed most game platform/engine/network work.
@zapakitul Haha so true. I’m guessing it’s pretty much assembly, and that the few C compilers around don’t generate optimized enough code?
I was feeling tempted to buy one for a bit :)
Just did a dev quote for an android phone app, plus raspberry pi server thingy to interface to a custom micro controller. To hopefully save lives of endangered whales and other sea critters..
Feels strange but good, to maybe do work that isn’t just about selling something.
@SodaXBread 5ml liquid koolaid flavor of choice
20-25ml liquid caffeine
1/8th tsp or so lite salt (salt/potassium mix)
Sweetner to preference
16oz water
Replaced my terrible and expensive energy drink habit.
@Enichan I get that, went from an Intel salary and mortgage to a renting from a slum lord in middle of no where. Life changed and I fell back into the trap of not being able to live on 15k/year or less. Had money again, debt again.. a lot less time and a whole lot less energy.
@Enichan Congrats at managing to keep it going. I’ve spent the last 7 years it seems like trying to get back to making my own IPs. Sigh the slippery slope of contract work.
