MACUA National Administrator Sabelo Mnguni and National Secretary Genaral Gift Radebe set the political context: the national crisis of SLP failure, systemic accountability vacuum, and the meaning of today's moment.
#MACUAWAMUA#LootedPromises#ReportLaunch
Recent data from MACUA’s Looted Promises social audit reveals that unemployment in communities located next to some of the country’s wealthiest mining operations consistently exceeds 65%, with some areas reaching a staggering 82% unemployment rate. These figures dwarf the official national average, and they expose a central truth that policymakers continue to ignore: the growth of mining profits is not translating into jobs, justice, or dignity for those most impacted by extraction.

MACUA has lodged a formal complaint against Hon. MG Mahlaule, Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Mineral and Petroleum Resources, for misleading Parliament, violating ethical and constitutional standards, and suppressing critical community testimony. The complaint, submitted to the Speaker of the National Assembly, the Joint Committee on Ethics, and the SAHRC, details how the Chairperson deliberately misrepresented MACUA’s submissions, excluded affected communities from oversight processes, and shielded powerful interests from accountability.
We demand a full investigation, a public correction of misleading statements, and the adoption of a binding stakeholder engagement protocol to prevent future exclusion of mining-affected communities. Parliament must serve the people, not protect the powerful.

MACUA will formally submit a detailed and damning report to the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) as part of the Commission’s National Inquiry into Artisanal Mining and its impact on surrounding communities and the scope and tactics employed in Operation Vala Umgodi.
The submission documents the events of the Stilfontein Massacre and lays bare the broader constitutional crises of exclusion, state violence, and systemic failure that impacts on mining communities across South Africa.
The report focuses on the events at Shaft 11 of the Buffelsfontein Mine, and how the state engineered a crisis where hundreds of artisanal miners were trapped underground, denied humanitarian aid, and left to die from starvation and dehydration.

MACUA condemns Parliament’s blatant betrayal of its oversight duty instead of holding the state accountable, the joint oversight meeting shielded police and political elites from scrutiny. The Stilfontein Massacre exposed the government’s class warfare, where starving miners were left to die while corporate elites like Patrice Motsepe remain untouched. We demand justice for the 93 miners who lost their lives.

Siyabonga Motha from @Radio702 speaks speaks to Sabelo Mnguni, our National Administrator, to provide commentary on our urgent application to the High Court for Humanitarian aid to be provided to illegal miners at Stilfontein mine that was dismissed. https://t.co/bprRA8yqWl
As Christmas and Hanukkah approach, a time of reflection, kindness, and humanity, we cannot celebrate while these miners remain in darkness, starving and separated from their loved ones. Their plight reflects the deep failures of our society—the mines, the state, and the courts failing to uphold basic human dignity and rights.

MACUA would like to once again thank all the community volunteers, social movements, unions and charitable organisations that have answered our call to attend to the humanitarian crisis unfolding at Stilfontein while the South African Government and other organisations of the state, particularly the South African police Service, tried to use starvation and deprivation of food as tools to bring about law enforcement.
We need to please keep donating since the Pretoria North High Court has dismissed our urgent application to compel the state to immediately commence rescue operations and provide food and humanitarian aid to the trapped miners who remain underground in Stilfontein. This is a fundamental denial of the miners’ right to life.
We remain resolute in support of the miners, and we will do everything in our power to fight, and we would appreciate donations towards the BackaBuddy account in solidarity with the miners.
We also need to continue putting pressure on the South African Government to do an immediate evacuation of the trapped miners underground. Don’t stop sharing the donation link in your networks and don’t stop talking about this.
Please keep spreading the word and keep advocating for the right to life of artisanal miners!

The recent ruling delivered on 20 December 2024 by the Pretoria North High Court, dismissing MACUA's application to compel the @GovernmentZA to immediately commence rescue and resurfacing operations and provide food and humanitarian aid to the trapped miners in Stilfontein, amounts to nothing less than a death sentence for those underground. It is a fundamental denial of their right to life.
While the court has affirmed the miners' right to receive humanitarian aid and acknowledged that they are trapped with no alternative source of sustenance, it may have erred in failing to affirm the state's duty and obligation to protect this right. The state bears the responsibility to ensure that the trapped miners' right to life is upheld and realised, especially given its role in engineering the existing crisis.

MACUA is delighted that the High Court of South Africa Gauteng Division has found that the Minister of @SAPoliceService , including his employees, especially the police officers stationed in #Stilfontein, have indeed #breached the interim court order that was granted in our favour and the artisanal miners who are trapped in Stilfontein, North West.
@LHR_SA is our legal representatives on the matter.
Stilfontein update: A body of a male has been retrieved by community rescue volunteers and it is difficult to identify at the moment as the North West Emergency Medical Services is still examining the body. A letter attached to the bag states that the resurfacing of the bodies be done quickly as the bodies are causing a bad smell.

The Mining Affected Communities United in Action (MACUA) is launching a four-day occupation protest at Sephaku Cement Mine’s Aganang Plant in the North West province. This follows the display of gross arrogance and refusal by the mine to engage with the grievances submitted last month by the Springbokpan and Bodibe branches alongside with the Itsoseng, Matile, Verdwaal and other affected communities.
