The Belize Zoo was founded in 1983 by Sharon Matola. It is home to more than 175 animals of about 45 species, all native to Belize.

We are pleased to announce Ms. Jada Daly of Belize City as the fourth recipient of the Sharon Matola Conservation Scholarship.
A recent graduate of Sacred Heart Junior College, Jada will begin her undergraduate studies in Environmental Science at Galen University this September.

We are closing our gates early on Tuesday, April 14th, 2026 for our quarterly general staff meeting. We are closing at 3PM, with last admission at 2PM. Regular operating hours resume the following day.

We take moment to wish Roxana “Roxy” Lemus a warm farewell as she begins another chapter in her professional career.
Roxana has been with the Zoo for over 10 years, providing dedicated service as a jaguar keeper, and one of our Lead Zookeepers.

Meet Tripod and Quad! The Belize Zoo is now home to a duo of gray foxes, the only species of fox native to Belize.
Tripod, as his name suggests, is a three-legged fox.
Quad, his “roommate,” is a surrendered pet.
