“What are you afraid of losing, when nothing in this world truly belongs to you?”
- Marcus Aurelius
Marcus Aurelius often reflected on discipline, responsibility, mortality, anger, compassion, and the difficulty of preserving good character when facing circumstances beyond our control. In Meditations, a collection of personal reflections written largely for himself, he repeatedly reminded himself that power, status, pleasure, and even life itself are temporary. His Stoicism was not about suppressing emotion, but about preventing outside events from controlling his thoughts, choices, and character.
For Aurelius, self-control was also revealed in the way a person responded to mistreatment. He encouraged himself to resist resentment, accept that human beings are imperfect, and continue behaving with fairness even when others failed to do the same.
His philosophy therefore presents strength as something greater than simply enduring pain or adversity. True self-mastery means facing hardship without allowing it to corrupt your values. The real test of character is not merely how much difficulty you can withstand, but whether you can endure it without becoming someone you never intended to be.
Suicide prevention starts long before a crisis. There's no single cause of suicide, and stressors like job loss, money problems, and social isolation can all play a part. The good news: everyone can play a part in prevention, too. Need support now? Call or text 988, or chat at https://t.co/9mSfTfaar5
