Zac Spavital

LB Coach, University of Maryland

[Larry in Missouri @LarryInMissouri]

Happy Birthday to the late Jim Spavital, out of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; 6’1 210; The legacy of Jim Spavital is that of an incredibly versatile gridiron pioneer who spent nearly 35 years leaving his mark across six different professional football leagues as a player, coach, and front-office executive. Known for his willingness to build leagues from scratch, he carved out a unique history across the @NFL AAFC, @CFL WFL, & USFL—Spavital had the rare distinction of never playing high school football. After being spotted on campus at @okstate he tried out, became a star fullback, and led @CowboyFB to a 34-0 victory in the 1945 @CottonBowlGame —Spavital’s legacy is also deeply rooted in his family tree, establishing a multi-generational coaching lineage. His son, @CoachSPAV became a longtime high school head coach in Oklahoma. His grandsons have carried the torch into modern college football; @JakeSpavital has served as a prominent college head coach and coordinator, while @ZSpavital has built a career as a collegiate defensive coordinator and assistant—Even up until his death from a heart attack in 1993, Spavital was working on expanding the game globally, actively trying to launch a professional football league in Japan; 9-15-1926 to 3-7-1993….

#GoGold in September. Back to school. Football season. Fall routines. It’s pediatric cancer awareness month too. Let’s not forget those kids that can’t get back to school. Send them hope and help.

In an era of movement, Daniel Wingate stayed.

Now, the Bowie native is a leader of @TerpsFootball's defense after a breakout season. Still, the man driven by faith, loyalty, and a relentless mindset is hungry for more.
