After thousands of Hindus lost their lives in Noakhali toward the end of 1946, Hindus in neighboring Bihar vowed revenge. But it was not blind revenge, there was a trigger.

That trigger was a girl named Kalyani Devi who was abducted by a Muslim rioter and brought to Bihar as Noor Jahan. The riot started as a rescue mission for this girl.

The Bihar Riots were the bloodiest in all of India that year, barring the frontier states of Bengal and Punjab. In several places the army had to be deployed to calm down the mob. In one episode, a unit opened fire on a Hindu mob killing 400. Nehru was in Patna at the time.
