🚨 JUST IN: The Ruto government is planning to borrow another KSh 80 billion through Treasury bonds in the coming weeks.

The plan is to reopen 10-year, 20-year and 30-year bonds, while using KSh 10 billion to partially buy back another bond maturing this November.

Here's what bothers me.

If Kenya were borrowing to build productive assets, major roads, rail, dams, irrigation, or power projects, those investments could increase economic activity for decades and help repay the debt.

But if we keep borrowing mainly to meet today's recurrent bills, tomorrow's taxpayers inherit the debt, while the money is already gone.

That's like taking a 30-year mortgage to pay this month's electricity bill.

Wasn't the promise that Kenya would reduce borrowing?

At what point does refinancing old debt and taking on new loans stop being a solution and become the problem?
