On 14 June 2025, Croatian freediver Vitomir Maričić held his breath underwater for 29 minutes and 3 seconds in Opatija, Croatia, setting a World Record for the longest time breath held voluntarily underwater.

He did it lying motionless in a three-metre-deep pool inside the ballroom of Opatija's Bristol Hotel, watched by five judges and around 100 spectators.

The time beat the previous record by nearly five minutes.

His time was roughly twice as long as a bottlenose dolphin is thought to hold its breath, and approached the ability of a harbour seal, animals whose lungs are vastly better adapted than ours, replacing up to 90 percent of their air with each breath compared to about 20 percent for humans.

In the UK, a young girl named Olivia Farnsworth suffers from chromosome 6 deletion. This extremely rare condition renders her incapable of feeling pain, hunger, or fatigue.

There are considered to be less than 100 people alive who have this condition, and Olivia is the only known case that exhibits all three of these symptoms.

As a baby, Olivia never ate much, never slept much, and never cried. Her mother found this exceptionally strange.

However, it wasn't until 2016, when Olivia was hit by a car and dragged on the pavement, that her mother realized how different her daughter was.

Despite the severity of the accident, Olivia got up, seemingly unscathed and calmly walked back over to her mother.

The doctors examined her and found that Olivia was perfectly fine except for some minor cuts and scratches.

The doctors believe that she was able to emerge from the accident with minor injuries because her body never tensed up because she had no sense of fear and couldn’t feel any pain from the impact.

A Vietnamese man named Thai Ngoc claims he hasn't slept a single night since 1973, after suffering from a strange fever. Despite decades without rest, doctors who examined him found no physical or mental damage-his health appeared completely normal.

On September 30, 1999, Hisashi Ouchi suffered the worst radiation exposure in history, 17 Sieverts, during a nuclear accident at a Tokaimura fuel plant.

Transported to the University of Tokyo Hospital, Ouchi was diagnosed with severely depleted white blood cells, requiring extensive skin grafts and multiple blood transfusions.

According to local reports from the time, he was described as 'crying blood' and pleaded with doctors to cease his treatment.

On the sixth day post-accident, an expert examining chromosome images from Ouchi's bone marrow cells observed scattered black dots, signifying their fragmentation. This meant Ouchi's body lacked the ability to regenerate new cells.

His condition continued to deteriorate.

Examinations revealed that radiation had eradicated the chromosomes responsible for skin regeneration, causing the gradual disappearance of his epidermis, the protective outer layer of his body.

By the two-week mark post-accident, he lost the ability to eat and required intravenous feeding.

Two months into the ordeal, his heart ceased, but medical intervention successfully revived him.

On December 21, after 83 agonizing days, Ouchi died of multiple organ failure.

Webcam shows mountaineer allegedly leave dumped girlfriend to freeze to death on Austria’s highest peak.

In January 2025, 33-year-old Kerstin Gurtner died of hypothermia just 50 meters below the summit of the Grossglockner, Austria’s highest peak.

Her partner, Thomas Plamberger, faced charges of gross negligent homicide after he reportedly descended the mountain alone to seek help while the weather was life-threatening.

Prosecutors allege the pair lacked proper gear and ignored deteriorating conditions, leading to a trial set for 2026 to determine the legal responsibility for the tragedy.
