On Nantucket Island lies this wonderful links gem. While it’s most known for the gorgeous lighthouse that looks over much of the golf course, the golf itself is the star of the show.

The golf course is subtle. On a windy site, it didn’t need a thousand bunkers and highly undulating greens to keep play interesting. The course uses the land to perfection.

The routing is two 9 hole loops that both end at the clubhouse. The holes flow in changing directions so the wind isn’t just with or against you, you will get a great variety of shots.

The greens are heavily sloped and mostly front to back. Distance control is key, putting from above the hole is very tough. In true links fashion, you can play the ball on the ground on most holes, which helps when the winds peaked at 45mph!

The turf is a wonderful firm and fast. The fescue is gorgeous and thankfully wasn’t super deep for us, but in the season apparently it can be brutal.

The design really shows so much restraint and yet is so fun to play. Sometimes less is more and Sankaty is a perfect example of that.

Sankaty is simply a blast. If you get the invite, it’s more than worth the 50 minute ferry ride. Just pure golf.
