How to Study a Verse.
You find a verse. Always:
Start with context. Don’t rip a verse out and run with it. Read what comes before and after. See the conversation.
For now, we will use Matthew 22:40.
So, we turn to Matthew 22:40. But, we read all of Matthew 22. When we do, we find that Jesus is answering a Pharisee about the greatest commandment. That matters.
Then notice who’s talking and who’s listening. Jesus is speaking straight to the religious leaders, with the crowd gathered. That detail frames the weight of His words.
Next, grab (write down or underline) the key words. In verse 40 it’s “hang on all the commandments.” That phrase holds the point. Everything in the Law and Prophets rests on love for God and neighbor.
After that, pull in the cross-references:
Deuteronomy 6:5.
Leviticus 19:18.
Romans 13:9–10.
Let Scripture explain Scripture. It always does it best.
Now, peek at the original word. “Hang” in Greek which in this example is kremannymi. Note what the word means.
Kremannymi means “to depend on, to be suspended from.”
We straight away see that Jesus isn’t erasing the law. He’s showing it all stands or depend on love. They are all because of Love.
Then ask.
What does this teach me about God?
What does it say about me?
Here we see that God’s character is love, and my obedience must grow out of that same love.
Finally, apply it.
How do I love God today? How do I love my neighbor?
That’s where the study becomes real.
